I am absolutely no help, really, but I just have to say that I am an American looking to make Canada MY permanent home & I have TONS of questions about making that big transition. Maybe we could chat! Good luck!

Many canadian banks have US branches where you can open an account. There are also some US banks that have branches in Canada
