My assumption here is that the DVD drive you have in your computer now is not set for the European region. Special software is typically not required to play DVDs from a different region, however, you must change the region the drive is currently set to. DVD drives are typically set to only allow a limited number of region changes, so you can't typically switch back and forth too many times.
